PGW's infrastructure includes aging pipes that require ongoing replacement. Cast iron and bare steel mains, dating from earlier eras, present leak risks and operational challenges. A multi-decade pipeline replacement program upgrades these aging facilities with modern plastic pipe, improving safety and reducing gas losses. Main breaks and leaks require emergency response capabilities deployed throughout the city. PGW maintains crews and equipment for responding to gas emergencies, which present explosion and asphyxiation risks.
