== Preservation ==

The Merchants Exchange survived the demolition that claimed much of Philadelphia's historic commercial district during urban renewal. The building's inclusion within Independence National Historical Park, established in 1948, ensured its preservation when surrounding blocks were cleared. This survival makes the Exchange one of the few remaining examples of Philadelphia's early commercial architecture, a physical reminder of the city's importance before New York's ascendancy. The building's current setting within the park differs dramatically from its original context. Where dense commercial development once surrounded the Exchange, open parkland now provides clear views of a building designed for tight urban conditions.
