Sharswood is a neighborhood in North Philadelphia undergoing major redevelopment. The neighborhood is the site of the Philadelphia Housing Authority's largest redevelopment project, transforming the former Norman Blumberg public housing complex into mixed-income housing.

History

[edit | edit source]

Sharswood is named for George Sharswood, a 19th-century Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice. The neighborhood was long dominated by the Norman Blumberg Apartments, a public housing high-rise complex that became a symbol of concentrated poverty.

Sharswood Transformation

[edit | edit source]

The Sharswood Transformation Plan is reshaping the neighborhood:

  • Demolition of Norman Blumberg high-rises (2016)
  • Construction of new mixed-income housing
  • Philadelphia Housing Authority's largest project
  • Goal of deconcentrating poverty
