Falls Bridge is a historic steel truss bridge spanning the Schuylkill River in Fairmount Park, connecting East Falls to the western portion of the park. The bridge provides an important link for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles accessing the park.

History

[edit | edit source]

The Falls Bridge was constructed in 1895, replacing an earlier wooden covered bridge. It was part of the late 19th-century development of Fairmount Park's infrastructure to accommodate increased recreational use.[1]

Design

[edit | edit source]

The bridge features:

  • Steel truss construction typical of the 1890s
  • Historic character maintained through restorations
  • Two vehicle lanes
  • Pedestrian walkways
  • Views of the Schuylkill River and surrounding parkland

Location

[edit | edit source]

The Falls Bridge connects:

  • Ridge Avenue in East Falls (east)
  • Chamounix Drive in Fairmount Park West (west)
  • Provides access to trails along both sides of the river
  • Near the historic Laurel Hill Mansion

Significance

[edit | edit source]

The bridge serves as an important connector within Fairmount Park, linking the eastern and western sections of the park system. It is particularly popular with cyclists using the Schuylkill River Trail and park loop roads.
