Grays Ferry Avenue Bridge is a bridge spanning the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, carrying Grays Ferry Avenue between the Grays Ferry neighborhood and Southwest Philadelphia. The bridge is named after the historic ferry crossing that operated at this location.

History

[edit | edit source]

The current Grays Ferry Avenue Bridge was constructed in 1976. The name commemorates Grays Ferry, one of the oldest river crossings in the Philadelphia area. The original ferry was established in the colonial era and was later replaced by a series of bridges.[1]

George Washington famously crossed the Schuylkill at Grays Ferry during his journey to his first inauguration in 1789, where he was greeted with elaborate ceremonies.
