Franklin Square is one of William Penn's original five public squares, transformed in 2006 from an underutilized park into one of Philadelphia's most popular family-friendly attractions. Located near the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and Independence Mall, the square now features a carousel, miniature golf course, playground, and the popular SquareBurger restaurant.[1]

The revitalized square draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and has become a model for urban park renewal.

History

[edit | edit source]

Original Square

[edit | edit source]

Originally called "Northeast Square" in Penn's 1682 plan, the park was renamed for Benjamin Franklin in 1825. Like other Penn squares, it served various purposes over the centuries—pasture, burial ground, and public commons.

Decline

[edit | edit source]

By the late 20th century, Franklin Square had become the most neglected of Penn's five squares. Located on the edge of downtown near the approaches to the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, the park saw little foot traffic and fell into disrepair.

2006 Revival

[edit | edit source]

Historic Philadelphia, Inc. partnered with the city to completely renovate Franklin Square, reopening it in 2006 with family-oriented attractions. The transformation has been remarkably successful, turning a forgotten space into a beloved destination.
