Musiq Soulchild
Taalib Johnson (born September 16, 1977), better known by his stage name Musiq Soulchild (stylized as Musiq), is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer from North Philadelphia. A leading figure in neo-soul music, Musiq has earned 13 Grammy nominations and is known for his smooth, soulful voice and heartfelt love songs.
Early Life
[edit | edit source]Musiq was born and raised in North Philadelphia. He had a turbulent childhood, often moving between the homes of various family members. He found solace in music, teaching himself to play multiple instruments and developing his singing voice by performing on street corners and in subway stations.[1]

[edit | edit source]Musiq emerged from Philadelphia's thriving neo-soul scene in the late 1990s. His debut album, Aijuswanaseing (2000), was released on Def Soul Records and featured the hit singles "Just Friends (Sunny)" and "Love."
The album was certified platinum, establishing Musiq as a major voice in contemporary R&B and neo-soul. His unique spelling conventions (dropping vowels from words) became a signature element of his artistic identity.
