Dawn Michelle Staley (born May 4, 1970) is an American basketball coach and former player, currently serving as head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team. A Philadelphia native, Staley is widely regarded as one of the greatest point guards in women's basketball history and has become the sport's most successful active coach.

Early Life in Philadelphia

Staley grew up in the Raymond Rosen housing projects in North Philadelphia, one of the city's most challenging neighborhoods. She developed her basketball skills playing against boys on the outdoor courts of her community, developing the toughness and competitive edge that would define her career.[1]

She attended Dobbins Career and Technical Education High School in North Philadelphia, where she led the team to three consecutive Public League championships and became a national high school All-American.

Playing Career

College

Staley played at the University of Virginia from 1989 to 1992, where she:

  • Won three ACC Player of the Year awards
  • Was named National Player of the Year twice
  • Led Virginia to three Final Four appearances
  • Finished as one of the most decorated players in ACC history

Professional

Staley played professionally in the ABL and WNBA, spending most of her career with the Charlotte Sting and Houston Comets. She was a six-time WNBA All-Star and led the Comets to two championships.

Olympic Career

Staley represented the United States in three Olympic Games:

  • 1996 Atlanta - Gold Medal
  • 2000 Sydney - Gold Medal
  • 2004 Athens - Gold Medal (as team captain)

She was flag bearer for the U.S. Olympic team at the 2004 Athens Games.

Coaching Career

Temple University

Staley began her head coaching career at Temple University in 2000, returning to her hometown. In eight seasons, she transformed the Owls into a nationally competitive program, reaching the NCAA Tournament four times.

University of South Carolina

In 2008, Staley became head coach at South Carolina, where she has built one of the most dominant programs in women's basketball history:

  • 2017 NCAA National Championship
  • 2022 NCAA National Championship
  • 2024 NCAA National Championship (undefeated season)
  • Multiple SEC regular season and tournament championships
  • Consistently ranked #1 nationally

Her 2024 team went 38-0, the first undefeated national champion in women's basketball since 2016.[2]

Philadelphia Legacy

Staley has never forgotten her Philadelphia roots. She frequently returns to the city for community events and has been vocal about her upbringing shaping who she is today. She has established programs to give back to North Philadelphia youth and is considered one of the city's greatest sports ambassadors.

In 2022, the City of Philadelphia unveiled a mural honoring Staley in North Philadelphia.
