Lincoln Financial Field (commonly called "The Linc") is a multi-purpose stadium in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, serving as the home of the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League and the Temple Owls football team. The stadium opened in 2003 and seats 69,796 fans for football, though it can stretch to over 72,000 for concerts and special events.[1]
It replaced Veterans Stadium, which the Eagles called home from 1971 to 2002. NBBJ designed the place to blend modern amenities with Philadelphia's hardcore football culture. The steep seating angles are part of what makes it so loud. Fans sit close to the action, and that closeness builds one of the NFL's most intimidating atmospheres. Then came the Eagles' first Super Bowl win following the 2017 season. Two million people showed up for the championship parade.[2]
History
From Veterans Stadium
The Eagles played at Veterans Stadium from 1971 to 2002. Sure, the Vet had its moments, but the seating was way too far from the field, the place was falling apart, and the multipurpose design meant sightlines for football were pretty bad.
By 1999, the Eagles and the city had worked out a deal: build a new football-only stadium right next to the existing sports complex.
Construction
Work started in 2001. The stadium was ready for the 2003 NFL season. The whole project ran about $512 million, split among:
- City of Philadelphia bonds
- Commonwealth of Pennsylvania contribution
- Eagles contributions
- Naming rights (Lincoln Financial Group paid $139.6 million over 20 years)
Opening and Early Years
August 3, 2003. That's when Lincoln Financial Field had its first game, a preseason matchup against the New England Patriots. The first regular-season game came September 8, 2003, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Super Bowl LII
The Eagles won Super Bowl LII on February 4, 2018. They beat the New England Patriots 41-33 in Minneapolis. The celebration afterward was massive. On February 8, 2018, roughly two million people packed the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the victory parade. It ranked among the largest celebrations Philadelphia's ever seen.

- Natural grass field: A full-time grounds crew keeps it in shape

Sustainability

- SEPTA Broad Street Line: NRG Station (formerly AT&T Station) puts you right on the subway, one stop from the stadium
- SEPTA Regional Rail: Special trains run for big events

- Walking: It's connected to Citizens Bank Park and Wells Fargo Center, so you can explore the whole sports complex
Tailgating
Tailgating matters here. This is what Eagles fans do before kickoff. Lots open 4-5 hours before the game starts. You can tailgate in designated parking areas, but there are rules: no glass bottles, and grills have to be off before you head into the stadium. Eagles fans bring serious energy to their tailgates. Sometimes it gets intense.
