Mastery Charter Schools is a network of charter schools operating in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Camden, New Jersey, focused on preparing students for college success. The network operates multiple schools across both cities and has become one of the largest charter school networks in the Philadelphia region.

History

Mastery was founded in 2001 and has grown into one of the largest and most prominent charter school networks in the Philadelphia area. The organization pioneered an innovative turnaround model, taking over and transforming several struggling Philadelphia public schools through partnerships with the School District of Philadelphia. Over more than two decades, Mastery has expanded its footprint to include schools in multiple Philadelphia neighborhoods and established operations in Camden, New Jersey, operating as Mastery Schools of Camden.[1]

Schools

The Mastery network includes elementary, middle, and high schools throughout Philadelphia and Camden. Notable schools in the network include Hardy Institute High School, which serves students in Philadelphia.[2] The network operates three different charter public school models designed to meet diverse community needs across urban neighborhoods. Schools are distributed across various Philadelphia neighborhoods as well as in Camden, New Jersey, providing educational options to families throughout the region.

Educational Approach

Mastery schools emphasize college readiness as their central mission, maintaining high expectations for all students regardless of background. The network employs data-driven instruction to continuously monitor and improve student performance, using assessment results to inform teaching strategies and interventions. Character development is integrated throughout the curriculum, with schools focusing on building students' social-emotional skills alongside academic competencies. Many Mastery schools utilize extended learning time, providing longer school days and years to maximize instructional opportunities and student support.

Turnaround Model

Mastery has been recognized nationally for its school turnaround model, which focuses on transforming struggling schools by improving student outcomes through comprehensive reform strategies. The model involves taking over underperforming schools from traditional districts and implementing substantial changes to leadership, staff, curriculum, and school culture. This replicable reform approach has attracted attention from education policymakers and researchers studying effective strategies for improving low-performing urban schools. The network's turnaround work has particularly concentrated on schools in Philadelphia that had previously faced persistent challenges with student achievement.

Recognition

In recent years, Mastery Schools has received recognition from the Philadelphia community. In 2025, Mastery Schools was nominated for the Philadelphia Inquirer's "Philly Favorites" recognition, highlighting the network's prominence in the region's educational landscape.[3]
