Rouge is an American restaurant and café at 205 S 18th Street on Rittenhouse Square, famous for pioneering outdoor sidewalk dining on the square and for the Rouge Burger—voted one of the 20 best burgers in America by GQ Magazine. Opened in 1998 by Maggie and Rob Wasserman, Rouge remains one of Philadelphia's premier spots for people-watching and al fresco dining.
History
When Rouge opened in 1998, it changed things. Maggie and Rob Wasserman set up shop on the east side of Rittenhouse Square and basically invented outdoor dining culture there, bringing a European-style café atmosphere to a city that wasn't used to it yet.
The sidewalk tables caught on fast. Within years, they'd become the place where you'd see Philadelphia's young professionals, celebrities, and socialites all mixed together. That's the magic of Rittenhouse Square's social scene, and Rouge was right at the center of it. More than 25 years later, the restaurant's still synonymous with the square's sophisticated vibe.
