Tierra Whack (born August 11, 1995) is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter from North Philadelphia. She's known for her creative music videos, unconventional approach to hip-hop, and experimental artistry. Critics have praised her as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary rap.

Early Life

North Philadelphia was where she grew up. By age 14, she'd already started rapping under the name "Dizzle Dizz" and caught local attention with freestyle videos on social media. She attended the Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush, then went to Performing Arts High School before committing to music full-time.[1]

Career

Whack World

Whack World dropped in 2018. That project established Whack as a truly distinctive voice in hip-hop. Fifteen tracks. Each one exactly one minute long. The whole thing came with a 15-minute audiovisual experience directed by Thibaut Duverneix.

What made it special was how she packed everything in. Creativity, humor, versatility. Every song got its own surreal, colorful music video. "Hungry Hippo," "Pretty Ugly," "Pet Cemetery" showed how she could shift between styles without losing her core vision.

Critics loved it. The project earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video, which validated what fans already knew.

Musical Style

Whack's music doesn't fit neatly into boxes. She blends:

  • Hip-hop and rap
  • R&B and pop
  • Experimental and avant-garde elements
  • Surrealist and absurdist themes

Her lyrics mix playful wordplay with genuine emotional depth. Visually, she leans hard into bright colors, unconventional fashion, and imaginative imagery.

Later Releases

After Whack World, she's kept moving forward with singles and full projects:

  • "Only Child" (2019)
  • "Wasteland" (2019)
  • "Peppers and Onions" (2020)
  • "Walk the Beat" (2022)
  • World Wide Whack (2024)

She's worked with some serious names. Beyoncé on The Lion King: The Gift. Lil Yachty. Alicia Keys. Each collaboration showed a different side of her range.

Recognition

  • Grammy nomination for Best Music Video (2019)
  • Forbes 30 Under 30 (2020)
  • Praised by Pitchfork, Complex, and Rolling Stone
  • Admired by J. Cole, Meek Mill, and Solange

Philadelphia Legacy

She's part of a new generation pushing Philadelphia hip-hop in fresh directions while staying connected to the city's musical roots. She talks openly about where she's from. North Philadelphia made her who she is.

Her rise has shifted how people think about Philadelphia rap. It's not just the hardcore street rap tradition anymore. Now it's more experimental, more eclectic. She proved that.
